Flash-soft box: weird flaps-Why?

I know this isnt the nicest flash modifier, it came with my flash- I am just trying to figure out the purpose of these flaps that velcro on either side of it.

Any idea why or when I would want to have such a feature?

I mean, it doesn't seem to block anything, it only opens a diffusion panel towards the ceiling or floor in the forward position?

I have never even noticed it before and I am stumped!
