Hello. I have been improving my photogenic presentation (i.e. my poise on camera) in order to publish publicity photos. Please be constructive and honest. Can you tell my gender? Can you give some pointers on posing better? Thanks

What camera/lens are you using? What are you using for lighting and how do you have them placed.

Welcom to the forum! :)

Someone who has experience with studio lighting can also give you some help. A lot can be corrected in post processing, but you'll want to get your skin tones evened out.

My lighting system isn’t that spectacular lol. I have a ring spotlight next to my iMac. It’s not usually turned on. There’s a lamp about a foot and a half away with one light pointed at the ceiling and the other pointed towards the carpet. My iMac camera is the internal one in a late 2015 model. It’s a Retina 5K.

The quick and dirty fix up is to use a soft image filter, and more distance, and shadowless lighting. It not a route to "creativity" but it is cheap, and easy to do, and hides a lot of problems.

Gender ? You could look like either gender depending on the shot, grooming, wardrobe, etc.

Posing ? Unless you have a real coach, do NOT "pose". Just address the lens as if youre conversing with friend, sometimes lIstening, sometimes about to speak.

Yes Sam your gender stands out and is well noted!
I would just say that perhaps your fascial expressions could be more 'interesting'. So not 'big smile and say cheese'!
But more serious, perhaps think different thoughts, don't think 'oh I'm being photographed'?

I noticed your "sex" as soon as the picture loaded. Gender orientation: Is woman. I actually remember watching a documentary about full conversion from man to woman (sex change). And at some point the woman got direction on how to be photographed. Because she thought she had it all figured out. Your born with a bone structure of a man and that shows when you attempt to show yourself like you see women posed in magazines, yet obviously you don't want to show off as a man wearing women's clothing.

I agree with Jools. "So not 'big smile and say cheese'!." You have large cheek bones and that comes through with a big smile. So smaller expressions will help you. And When Jools says: "perhaps think different thoughts." What I think he means is: Think happy. When your happy it shows all over.

I thought about your poses and the hair. As a heterosexual man when I wake up in the morning I think of flying in Microsoft flight simulator 2020. When I reply to a thread like this I want to be objective. I noticed right away you were born a man. The abundance of hair to cover for your "grande" body. Your shoulders are in, instead of out. Low confidence "look." Is this what your aiming for?

I'm not gay or born in a mans body with the mind of a woman. But if you were to ask me to model you and take photographs of you. I would ask you to push back your shoulders, so your breasts are more prominent. A professional make up artist and a professional stylist for the right fit of clothing would be good to. There are some women that look quite manly. A stylist might help a lot.

ya know one of the things I read about over the years was focus. More to the point, focus on the eye's. Claim was if the eyes are in focus everything is. I think they were talking about simply a good photo. I always focus on the eyes if I can, and it does seem to me to make a lot of difference. Notice in yiue photo's the eyes are out of focus in every one! Notice in the top two the drop cloth falls into the photo.

Who is yiue? When I first started I said the same thing. I think a lot argued against that. The original poster didn't use a camera. But a webcam on a laptop I believe? They can't correct focus.
