Hey everyone, I'm pretty interested in this 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 AF VR. Does anyone have any experience with it? Or have a better idea for surfing shots? I would like to try to avoid prime lenses as you never know here in Fl if the wave break is 100ft away or 100 yds away.

That lens is pretty slow to focus on anything but a pro dslr. But it's a decent lens! Go try one out at a photo supply store.

I think the 80-400 will be too slow to focus for surfing. Most I know that shoot surfing are using 300mm or 500mm primes. If you want zoom, maybe a 70/80-200 with a TC? See if you can rent one in your area and try it out before laying out the cash.

I've got one and it's a very good lens. It is slower than the 70-200G VR but not that slow. You can speed it up a little by putting it on limit so it is not hunting all along the focal range. I would be OK for surfing but it is a big heavy SOB. I use it on a F5.
