Good morning. I'm after some advice if I may.

I'm a complete amateur with my Nikon camera that I've had for quite a few years. I've generally done nothing other than have the wheel button on 'Auto', point and clicking. That's just about it.

However, I've recently been asked to take photographs of a children's running event on a weekly basis and I'm really after some advice on which setting to have my camera.

If anyone's able to give me as an amateur some basic advice on settings, I'd be most grateful.

If auto is what you’re used to I’d leave it there for now. On the side take a basic class that can show you what manual setting do and how to use them.

Maybe read up on the manual and experiment, just not on the clients stuff.

G'day Graham

Firstly - Welcome ! to the photo forum .... there are plenty of people here open to offering beginners all sorts of helpful hints

A post above points you to a Nikon manual site--all very good and it will have a lot of reading ahead!

May I offer you one of my workshop student notes to start with. It's for Panasonic camera users, but 90% of the text is identical to just about all other cameras .... a bit like driving a car, most of the stuff is the same or very similar

Hope this helps
Phil

When capturing motion, a slow shutter speed will introduce blur into the image. The little 'sprinter' icon on the wheel puts the camera in auto mode, but the bias is towards faster shutter speeds to better capture speedy motion. Works great outside, and usually ok indoors, if you can live with higher ISO settings, which I'll bet are automatically selected by the camera.
