This must happen to other people occasionally. Any bright ideas, other than cutting it off? I don't mind sacrificing the step ring but I want to save the hood adaptor.

Lol you must of tighten that thig really hard. Just press it down between your palms and twist really really hard, always works for me.

I think there is a rubber band trick. Use 2 rubber bands and wrap around the hood adapter and step up ring. It should give you a better grip.

Also, I heard some other people use heat. If both are metal, you may try to heat up the one that is wrap around the other one (in thread level). Be careful not to burn yourself. When the outer one heat up and expand, it maybe easier to unscrew it.

If you are able to unscrew them, maybe use a pencil to rub/write on the thread. It can act as a lubricant.

P.S. Of course, do not heat up with the rubber band on the ring unless you are using hot water. And hoping that the adapter and the ring made by different material and expand differently.

Success!!

Heat did the trick, or rather cooling down after being heated.

Edit - I had another post in here, it doesn't matter anymore but where did it go?

Filters get stuck all the time. The usual problem is that when you squeeze it to grip it, you're applying pressure to the shape of the circle, making it harder to rotate. So the soultion is to apply the force as evenly as possible...hence the suggestions for using your palm or a rubber band.
Or you could buy a filter wrench General Brand Filter Wrench (Set of 2) B&H Photo Video

A nice little trick, is to take a pencil and rub some of the lead/graphite onto the threads before you put the filter on. That acts as lubrication and hopefully helps them from getting stuck.
