lens for D800

Just received the 24-70mm f/2.8 and run some preliminary test. I am happy to report I think I can now stop buying and start shooting. The lens is probably going to supersede my expectations. And it just feels right. Heavy - yes the D800 and lens are well over 4 pounds but seems solid as if they were made for each other. The lens shade fixes to the body of the lens and as the lens ungulates it never gets in the way - pretty slick. Focus is smooth and the zoom well per portioned. It seems to default to 50mm as I use it. Happy;)

Today I received my 70-210 AF f/4 lens. I have run some preliminary test putting it up against my 105 and my 24-70 at 70 and must say I am really pleased at the result. The lens holds it own very well. I think this will be my stand in for the 70-200 f/2.8 AF VR for some time to come. The lens is sturdy and focus down to 3'5" which is good. It is a constant f/4 all the way through and takes 62mm filters (lens rotates as focused) If you can find one, they are around 300 bucks used and make a good replacement on your D800 for the pricy 70-200 if you can live with the smaller f stop.

I have just bought a UK pro mag where they are testing the D800 and they say it is a must to have fast lenses of top quality, fast shutter speeds or tripod to make the most of the cameras 36mp because it has got such good resolution any movement or flaw in the lens can be easily seen

I have to agree! After using it bit, the D800 will excel when paired with the best, fast glass! It is amazing! But even with slightly lesser glass (NO KIT LENSES PLEASE).. it still gives very excellent images. It does require good shooting technique... as any error will show up in the shot. On a tripod, it does appear to rival MF, beautiful detail! I am glad I decided to go with the D800

Yes I too agree. I use a tripod most of the time as my type of nature work requires it. I started out with 4X5 Calumet View cameras and Pentax 6X7 and now am able to do most all I did on film digitally with the D800E. I use the same technique as I did with those cameras out of habit. Also - Macro with high speed flash really shines. The camera is just plain awesome!

I have to agree with everything stated about the D800. But, that's not to say it's not possible to handhold. I've handheld most of my shots with it, and most are good. But, you have to be VERY cautious. Like everyone said, it's less forgiving than most other cameras for obvious reasons. But, let me tell you: when you get it, you GET it. And the D800 can give it to you.
