If any of you have kids, why do most grown-ups squat when their child gives them a hug?

Why is it that When a toddler, or older child like 7 years old gives an adult a hug, the grown-up always squats? What does squatting have to do with any aspect of a hug? For any parents that have kids in this age range like me, when they give you a hug, Why do ya'll squat with you toddler? Why do ya'll squat with your 7 year old? Can someone please explain to me why exactly you don’t just stay standing for these two ages? I honestly don’t see what squatting has anything to do with a hug

Hi Sarah

As one of many 'squatters' it falls into two camps or reasons...
1- so that the two people are eye to eye and make a connection of some sort, and
2- so that a tall adult does not over-whelm a toddler with their size

It's a matter of friendliness and compassion

Hope this helps
Phil

Try it sometime.

As @Ozzie_Traveller said, it creates a connection, makes it less awkward, and treats them as if they are on equal ground. If you are still unsure, find someone of similar height to you, and give them a hug while you’re on your knees and they are standing.

Yeah... when I was little, I liked hugging adults calves and knees. It was so rewarding. I always had to hug them from the side or back to keep from stumbling over their feet.

When my kids were small I'd typically pick them up to give them a hug.
That's not practical for everyone & squatting down is the next best option.

Having kids with their heads at my groin does not appeal to me (or I assume them)

But what does picking up your child, or squatting have to do with giving a hug? And I’m also confused why they seem to do it with kids toddler age and kids even 7 year old.

Do you expect the wee ones to jump up 2-3 feet?

Why would they need to jump? When a 7 year old gives you a hug, they can hug you, and you can reach down to hug them. The same with the toddler. I’m confused why you’re saying they would need to jump?

surely you are still connecting when the both of them hug you. And how is it awkward if you don’t squat?
This seems fine

I'm confused as to why you think when others do things different than you do, it's somehow weird... or wrong.

Those shots are at stomach height, no longer an issue - even though my belly is quite a bit bulkier than that :(
