Is there a specific reason why in some instances one might sit when they take a photo with a kid, but then they might stand other times? Is there really a difference between one over the other?

Nope, no specific reasons I can think of. The only difference I see is the difference in eye levels across the pictures.

Your example pictures show the answer. In the 2nd picture you were able to keep the faces in-bounds at a reasonable size with a smaller overall picture In the first picture you needed a taller picture to accomplish this.

Whenever I see one of two things or both, I always wonder why 1. When someone is in a photograph with a child or toddler, they always squat. 2. When a photographer photographs a toddler, even when there are multiple people, they also squat for some reason. What are the reasons for both...
