IF you have the cash, I'd get a D700. If you don't have that much cash to throw at it, then the D7000 would be the next choice. Let's say we aren't comfortable with that amount of cash either, then I'd say a D90 (maybe used) would be best. Now if at this point you're like "wtf I don't want to spend that much cash" then the D5100 might be a better choice. Obvious choices after that are D3100 and used D40.
 
Awesome, thanks! It won't hurt to drop that cash for a camera the problem is saving up for it, lol! Anyone have a used one in payments?Might take me a while but that camera WILL be mine. Can't wait to get it and learn!
 
Welcome! I love my Nikon, but I grew up with Nikons so I'm biased. I have a D200, its old but its good. Not great in Low light but doesn't overexpose often which is great when I'm shooting wedding dresses! My advice, If this is just a hobby, buy a cheaper body and get a couple of decent lenses. Playing is more fun when you have more variety of lenses.
