Canon Rebel XS Battery cover broken.

I've had my new XS for two days. 10 minutes ago I accidentally dropped it on the table from a distance of 6 inches. It landed on the battery cover, which was open. It did in such a way that it broke one of the plastic hinges and apparently something which didn't let my camera turn on.

****. i try and look for the problem and fear that it's something to do with the battery connection and that I'll have to send it in to Canon after only two days of having it.

Turns out the tiny fall broke off the tiny little plastic thingy that pressed the tiny little button when the battery cover is closed, which in turn notifies the camera that the battery is securely placed and thus can turn on.

T_T Man that is a cheaply built battery cover.

So now I have it working by placing a little piece of cardboard on top of the little button so it presses it when I close the battery cover. Works great, until I have to take the battery out and I'll have to put the paper or something else in or the camera will refuse to turn on, agh. Luckily the grip will undoubtedly fix this when I get it. But for now I have to keep using the paper or make up something else.

Anyone have any ideas?

TL: DR I broke my battery cover, have to use a piece of paper to turn on the camera. How can I make a more permanent fix until I get my battery grip?


P.S. Yes I know I'm an idiot. but common it was only 6 inches and at the perfect angle for it to brake.


*EDIT* I'm gonna order a new cover online. $14.95... Oh well. I'd much rather have it and make sure the camera won't shut off while using it or something.

...you know... I don't think you can really blame the build... last time I checked, battery covers aren't built to withstand a 6 inch fall while wide open...

I'm sorry that happened to you though... I hope you get it fixed soon!

Thanks, and yeah I guess you're right. I just bothers me that because of that tiny piece of plastic it renders the camera useless unless I apply a temporary fix or a new cover. And I think the higher end bodies have metal hinges and cover. I think. I wish I had a 7D... Or even a T2i. *cries*

How's your T2i treating you? Haven't seen you post new pictures, or I missed them...

Hahaha! I was gonna say... you missed 'em 'cause I posted 'em!

It's treating me well I'm sitting here reading more of the manual as we spea...as I type this...

Haha. Luckily I read up on my camera's settings and everything beforehand so I only had to read a few things from the manual. Gotta read Understanding Exposure though. And I have a lot, almost everything, to learn about editing.

I have one, but I'm not really sure I'm digging it. I feel like it doesn't explain things clearly... but now that I've been immersed in the process a bit more, maybe I'll understand it better.

I couldn't tell you what it was called right now or who it was by.. someone on here recommended it to me... send me a PM and I can let you know what it is later when I see it.

I'm planning on going back to it after I'm done with UE (and the manual), but I've put it down for the time being.

I've been recommended to look into books regarding composition in painting. Interesting idea, since at the core it is the same as in photography.
