Do you set up your camera to one ratio and shoot all images in that, then change in post to accommodate to what you want to print? Also would you feel comfortable printing a 16x20 from 9MP file size if it would a good clean image?

For my Nikons, in order to use the full sensor, my aspect ratio is 3:2. I almost always crop a little wider to be able to change the aspect ratio in post for my intended output. The social media sites all have different recommendations for number of pixels and aspect ratio.

I would not recommend going less than 120 pixels / inch, but that's image and viewer dependent. I'm assuming your 9mp image is 3000 x 3000 pixels. You should be OK up to 25 x 25.

Never crop in camera, and always shoot loose, that way you have room to change your aspect ratio post. Also, keep in mind that if you print and frame, you'll lose 1/4" on all sides. So anything close to the edge of the print gets cut off.

I love 4:3 for stills and 2:1 for video. But I never crop in camera. It gives you options.

I never printed so I have this bad habit to fill frame. Tough to quit but you are right.

G'day slat

I print 24" wide stuff from a 12mpx original .... meaning that it's a bit over 300DPI - and no-one who ever visits comments about supposed image quality, esp as I am using superzoom / bridge cameras with small sensors

As to cropping, I like others above use the zoom to best fill the frame, and when it comes to framing, I have a small mat cutter so cut the mat to suit the subject - it could end up all sorts of sizes

Hope this helps
Phil

The only reason it would be cropped in camera is if I used an EF-S lens on a full frame camera.
