I apologies if I'm a philistine for not reading the rules correctly but can I enter a photo myself to the TPF challenge or must you be nominated. Is there a challenge that I can enter my own image ?

You enter your own picture for the monthly challenges. The photo is submitted via email and all the challenge photos are then posted (with no names) in a voting thread. The photographer of the winning picture is then announced when voting is over.

You are confusing this with the Photo of the Month. That photo must be nominated by someone else. You can't submit your own photos for PotM.
