Portrait photography lighting equipment

I am a product design student tasked with the project of designing a piece of lighting equipment for beginner portrait photography. I would like to ask the portrait photographers out there what aspects they wished their lighting equipment was better at doing? This could be regarding the lamp itself, the stand, etc.
