K1MIII.....MAYBE

My original k-1 and K-3 won’t last forever. Desirability for me would depeand on it replacing both those cameras, with better than K-3III resolution in crop mode, so I can improve output both FF and APS-c lenses, and have a frame rate in APS-c equivalent to or higher than my K-3’s 8 FPS.

In FF mode, I’d look for a continued high DR rating.

I’ll start saving my pennies. I’d like at least the 48 MP of my phone images, with 42 being the minimum. If they go the same route as everyone else, trading resolution for dynamic rage, I won’t be interested.

I currently have many images like this one that use the full dynamic range of the K-1, which is still very highly rated. I’d have to have very good reason to give that up.

Detail in the blacks is what high DR is all about.

Never had an issue with DR on the K3ii or the K1Mii even when the scene DR exceeded the camera. Bracketing, changing perspective orsupplemental lighting usually handle it.

The 60mp would be nice, though truthfully I've never printed anything larger than a 16x20, which works now.

When we were doing trade shows, we sold K-5 and K-3 images printed at 30x20” and they were more than acceptable. I bought the K-1 to improve IQ. The improvemnt in reall life, was barely noticeable. My largest K-3 image is 43x32, and it still looks great. People have asked to buy it off my wall. that’s why I’m so hesitant to give up DR for resolution. I know I don’t have much use for the reolution, and if you look at the lw/ph numbers for high resoltuion cameras, you realize there is a serious decline in resolution per pixel. My K-3 has a lw/ph resolution at about 2700, lwph. My K-1, about 3500. SO the K-3 ar 122.5 lw/ph per MP
The K-1 works out to 97.2 lw/ph per MP. As sensor resolution increase MP, how efficient the camera is at using those MP goes down. 50% more pixels only about a 20% more lw/ph. Evenwith the increase in pixel size of the K-1.

I’m 76 now, if Pentax wants to sell me a new body, they better not take too long. There’s a lot of old Pentax users in the same boat.

One year behind you.😁 I can easily spend the money on new gear without worry, but do I want to at my age?

Something lighter? I’ve been considering 4/3.
Weight isn't an issue, as I'm generally on a tripod anyhow. I can hand hold the k1mii and Pentax 70-200 f2.8 but it's not ideal. Works better on tripod or monopod.

I’ve taken to doing a lot of birding and wildlife, using the K-3 and DA 55-300 PLM. Images like the one below, depend on mobility. On this trip, I set up my tripod in promising locations and got almost nothing. I have DA*60-250 and a Tamron 300 2.8 AF ID, but, it’s the DA 55-300 PLM that has enabled me to expand my parameters and shoot on the fly.

I also have the DA 55-300, it's a solid performer. My 1st love is portraiture so the 70-200 f/2.8 is my go to for ambient. However weighing in at over 4lbs, it's 4x's heavier than the 55-300. Put it on the K1MII and you're holding 7lbs of dead weight. It's possible to hand hold but it's tiring.

Tammy 300 2.8 is 6 pounds, it’s been 5 years since I could hand hold it more than a minute or two.
