Yes. The Canon RS-80N3 Remote Switch (works with your 50D) can be locked to hold the shutter release for as long as you like.

Even the cheap infra-red remote releases effectively lock the shutter. One press activates the shutter (in Bulb), the second press closes it.

I'd go for a dirt-cheap remote off eBay. Mine cost ~$4 from China and works perfectly.

I bought a cheap Chinese e-bay remote for my Canon 30D and it works fine. It's not really sturdy so, if I needed to use it alot, I'd probably buy the Canon OEM version.

This is the one I've got.
IR Remote Control for CANON Feels sturdy enough to me, never had any problems. You have to be quite close to the camera but that shouldn't normally be a problem.

My 30D doesn't have IR, so my switch is the wired kind (the canon wirless transmitter/receiver combination is mucho $$$).

I'd use a film camera, else start killing off pixels.
