hi all. someone recently purchased a holga digital. i like to encourage this person's interest in photography, and she needs a flash. it needs to be tiny because the camera is small and cute, and accessories need to be in theme. so i was thinking one of the tiny vivtars because they cost nothing, but i keep reading about trigger voltage and digital cameras. i know nothing about digital. will an old direct flash fry her camera? if so, what's a cheap and easy to use alternative?

thanks!

i appreciate the quick reply, but i don't know ... Holgon 120MF with Digital. also about 40x the budget i have in mind.

trying to find the 120mf's trigger voltage, found this sheet. should help.

$40 is 40 times the budget you had in mind? sooo...your looking for a flash that only costs $1?
thats gonna be a tough one....even for a flea market find.

^stretch goal, but bet i get it dang close.

edit:
ordered a canon 166a and a 188a with a diffuser. both are around, slightly on each side the guide number of the the discontinued holga 12 mfc flash it's pictured with on the holga digital website. i don't think it being pictured with that flash means anything or that it's going to work well with any flash, but it's supporting my best guess. both are rated to be safe with digital cameras. will update if she gets acceptable results from either, because there's nothing about using a flash successfully with this camera that i can find.

for the record, 99 and 69 cents respectively (well, plus $8 shipping).

I have a Holga and a Diana and other assorted plastic & bakelite vintage cameras but don't use a flash often and basically, if it's manual and has a hot shoe I can stick a flash on it (one that functions by battery on its own). HOWEVER - I can't find anything for their digital... I don't know what that takes other than their flash pictured on the Holga digital website.

But I'm not finding one (but I only looked a couple of places where I've bought that type thing). I looked at Freestyle who has a Holga flash for $12.99 but I don't see if it's for their digital or film cameras. I tried Samy's Camera, not finding one for their digital on their site either. Besides Freestyle and Samy's and Adorama and B&H or the Lomography site I can't think where else to try offhand.

The Holga digital site has a press kit with a pdf etc., maybe try there. I can't find what exactly is usable with that digital (unless it's like their film cameras that you just need a flash that's battery operated and functions separately from the camera).

Try asking on http://www.filmphotographyproject.com and see if anyone knows.

edit - But thanks for getting me looking at those sites and finding something I want, now I have GAS.

i appreciate all the research! in doing my own i found that the holga digital is not made by the same company -- just licensed branding. and that it does not really have two aperature settings, that it has wild meta data claiming strange shutter speeds, and who knows how the iso works. so yeah, figured there was no exact science. guess that's the holga way.
