I've decided that I want to step up from using my phone to take pictures and found a good deal on a Canon Rebel XS with a couple lenses. I know this camera is pretty old, but would it be adequate for someone beginning to dive a little deeper into photography? On the other hand, would it be better to save up a little more and get a more recent dslr?

Its ok but, Save. Unless its free or 50$ with a decent lens.

Ditto.

Used carefully, that camera will deliver some great images, and better than your phone. But over the long run, you'll probably prefer your phone thinking that you're getting sharper and cleaner images. That's because the "age" of the sensor is a huge factor and it's likely that your phone was built within the last year or two, and that camera is pretty old.

In the meantime, if you describe what kind of photography interests you, we could have some good information here about recommendations that might make sense.

I have this camera and can tell you that your phone has about the same dynamic range and in fact may even be better.
Could you use it to learn the basics of photography certainly. Just don't expect to be pushing the ISO on this camera.
Like stated above the camera isn't worth much at all so base this purchase on the lenses.

My 'starter' was a Rebel T2i. While a little bit older (2011 ish?) I was very pleased overall with the functionality and image quality. It's a great little camera body (the kit lense is terrible)! I don't know what your price range is, but you can probably find one for $200-$300.

Agree with the others. It depends on price and what's included. How much is it? What lens or lenses are included? What's the condition?

For a beginner, it may be good to just get used to carrying around a camera. If it gets dinged up, so what. If you drop it, so what. The point would be to get the basics of whether or not you WANT or NEED to carry around a camera. If you don't plan on using a DSLR or mirrorless to it's full advantage, it'd be better finding this out on a crappy old used camera than to spend even several hundred on a new, entry-level camera.

What type of photography do you like?
