Anyone fancy a game of Mornington Crescent?
Well as its the 8th of the 8th today I'll start with

I found that as well but Waterstones have ordered me a new copy as I've lost my old one.
Anyway lets open this game up a bit, going for the classic Holland Park

You are to be commended for such a bold gambit so early in the game. Although some would call it foolhardy.

Sadly, Chris and Daan must each forfeit a turn for breaching the Rules. The play remains with "Turnham Green" (although I think Chris is actually turning red...)

Hertz van Rental
08-08-2007, 06:18 PM
Strictly speaking 'Mornington Crescent' was possible from 'Chalk Farm' so Chris passing it up means that Anti was blocked from making that move for two goes. The Belgian ammendment makes that quite clear.
You can't offer the completion then make it yourself with only one station played between your offer and your play.
Even under Brody that is blatant cheating. If you are going to play the game, play it properly.
Antarctican
08-08-2007, 06:21 PM
You could be right, but Chris a) missed the play from Chalk Farm, b) the Belgians can't be trusted as they waffle so much, and c) Chris has conceded. So nyah nyah. http://www.invision.smileyville.net/smilies/girl (11).gif

the Belgians can't be trusted as they waffle so much
It wasn't an ammendment by the Belgians - it was an ammendment accepted by the Rules committee when they met in Belgium in 1982! D'uh!
Re-starts are only allowed after a minimum 24 hour break. And the first play can only be made by someone who did not play in the previous round unless the break is longer than 48 hours.
Am I the only one who has read the rules?

Surely that only applies for face to face games. For the internet version you only need to be registered with your local chapter I think - Hertz I'm sure can confirm. Take a provisional move, we can always replay from New Cross Gate if necessary

I gather that the rules committee has referred this one to the UN Security Council, something to do with weapons of mass disruption I gather. You're both using the "Two Lover Gambit" first seen in the Galactic Championships of '83 (you remember...it was when the Russians were disqualified for faking a rule book supposed to date back to the time of Christ).
It was a brave attempt you two, I applaud your knowledge of the rules and gambit plays!

Clarinet....you've been reading up on the "Jig Saw Plays". Did you not read the 'Classic Counter Play' book by Anata Bodlinski. She was 17 times runner up in the world championships. She never won 'cos she spent too much time "countering". Anyway, I'm rambling, the correct play to counter is:
Taubstummengasse
However, those of you with a knowledge of 'Classic Umanblev attacks' will know that there is a winning sequence that can follow this play, it's just that I'm not allowed to use it! (Da*n rules)

The 1912 game between Balinkov and Simandova was played out exactly like this!
Have you noticed that ALL the GREAT players seem to come from the Eastern Block. Why is it that whenever 'Blighty' invents a game, everyone else "thrashes" us at it (Cricket, Rugby, Mornington Crescent....Life's so cruel!)
Anyway, I'm up for another thrashing....so...

I was not referring to you but to the writers of the Great books and the World famous players (judging by that last play sequence, you will be among them soon!). I did not know you were a Brit so I am suitable admonished! (I await Anty to deliver the spanking I deserve)

To be fair, I never assumed any nationality for you....my post only related to the Great Grand Masters of the game, who all seem to be Eastern Block (something to do with steroids?).:x
However, it warms the 'cockles of my heart' to know that such a skilled player is also a Brit (watch out for the press, they love to knock a winner off thier pedestal):hail:
