View Full Version : Suggestion for two new forums

Can we please please please have two new forums on this board. Hopefully it'll clean up the General Discussion forum.
The Talk Dirrrty to Me Forum
Sort of a cross between A Men Seeking Women/Women Seeking Men forum and a Teenage Gossip MSN Chat Channel. To put it in simply, this is where you hit on other forum members.
The Desperate & Dateless Forum
Got you're schools 10 year reunion coming up and you need a foxy lady/hot bod'ed toyboy to take? This is where you go to say you want to pick up hot photographers but are just too lazy to do all the smooth talking.

Oooh oooh, *raises hand* I've got one!
How about:
The Barely here and comes back only to whine about the off-topic forum Forum

Don't you know that the off-topic section is the Forum of the Neverending Innuendo?

How about a Clean forum, where no innuendo is allowed. That would probably be easier that the other way. Otherwise all the other forums will die a quick death.

How about we start being a little more strict on things....
Here are my 2 thoughts:
1. Outside of the off-topic area, the posts should all be photography based. Most are, but I do seem some other things happening out there. If it isn't directly photography related, or if you have a comment that you are thinking about adding to a thread that goes in a different direction, please don't post in that thread.
2. If you are responding to a thread (off-topic forum or not), please stick to the topic of the thread. The off-topic forum is a place to chit-chat and have fun, but the posts in a thread should at least have something to do with what the thread was started for! Most people get frustrated if they start a topic on a subject and next thing you know it is 5 pages long and only the first page had anything to do with the subject.

I pretty much agree with Chase. I should have added a wink to my last post, as it was mostly tongue in cheek. The other board I'm on has fairly strict rules about off-topic posts, and I think it works rather well. The member list is big enough that it has to be that way. On a smaller board I don't think you need to be as strict, but there seems to be enough activity here that some restraint would be a good thing. I can understand people getting miffed about threads going way out into left field.
I'm a very non-sequiter kind of guy, so I can be happy posting about random crap until the cows come home, but it usually isn't very constructive for people who want to learn or discuss something specific.
For the most part, I think the gallery, critique, and other photography specific threads do pretty well as far as staying on topic, so I don't think it would take much effort to keep the silly stuff for silly threads in the Off-Topic forum.

ditto...
I agree with everyone here... it has gotten a bit out of hand but most of it has stayed in the OT forum. People going off topic in a thread is a problem but I've seen it much worse. Since this really isn't a chatroom it would be nice if the topic you click on stays to that topic. At least for the most part. If a couple posts here and there are out of place that doesn't matter. It's when things stay off topic.

You guys must've been 'raised up' in different forums than me. Over at reefs.org, the off-topic forum is known for going wayyy off track in pretty much every thread. Personally I think it's fun.

Yea, every general discussion in the other forums I frequent always go way off topic. All you gota do is bring up the original topic in your next post if you want to talk about it more.

Well, there have been a lot of just "fun" threads where I don't see it as being a problem at all. My "Special Announcement" thread was meant to be like that from the start. But if someone starts a thread asking for non-photography advice or about their pets or a favorite sports team, it would be nice to know that it wouldn't be hijacked into a thread about tea and cumpets.

That's sounds good, as long as people would be willing to drop the sidetrack or start a separate thread on it.

gotta add a few more things here- i have been in the process of moving into a new house for about 3 weeks now, and before that i was buried with work for clients, so have not had any time in the last month or so to learn new things or post in the gallery for feedback. (am definitely having withdrawal symptoms). thus, all of my posts have been in ot, which i am able to do on the fly and very quickly. this has kept me in touch with the people here, kept me in touch with people who share my passion for photography, even if the topics on which we converse are not necessarily photo-related. the ot forum has kept me connected to and active on this website as a whole. if you limit ot too stringently, this would take away a significant amount of the spontenaiety that makes it fun, and i guess during phases like the one i'm in i'd have just to read and not participate, which would be boring as hell. i'd probably just drift away to another board. and yup, i know, a few here would love to see that happen :P so i probably just argued my way into that which would least like to see. my bottom line: keep it the way it is and let people who don't like the evolution of the ot stick to other parts of the site, which is what they're arguing for in the first place.
side note- it blows my mind, nukie, that you can't bring yourself to stay away from ot if it irriates you so much. i think maybe deep down you get a kick out of reading the ot threads, then get even more of a kick out of complaining about them.

Over at RDO their OT forum is very similar...people bitch about it left and right...but keep going back. :D

Let me clarify my position...
The off-topic area is pretty close to a free for all (and that isn't entirely bad) but if someone starts a relatively serious topic in there, everyone should at least make an effort to stay on that topic. I don't really intend to moderate the OT area much, but I'd like to see a little more respect (for lack of a better word) given to what the topic of some of the threads are if it is a somewhat serious topic.
I just did a terrible job of explaining my position, but hopefully you guys can figure it out

I don't think I've broken a bone... if I have it's been in my toes. My pinky toes have been stubbed and restubbed so many times.
I have gotten turf toe. It's where you fold your big toe underneath your foot. Took a year to heal properly.

Well I'm not as reckless with my body as I used to be...but sometimes you just have to do things that will put you in danger.
I've had some broken bones, plenty of sprains, strains & dislocations...and a scar here and there...I don't remember the pain I was in at the time...but I sure do remember how much fun I had.

I was never a chicken to do things that could possibly break my bones... I just got lucky.
One time I decided to see how fast I could get on my mountain bike. The hill was long and steep. My speedometer on the bike said 66.3 mph but I'm not sure if I got that fast. My buddy who was driving the truck behind me stopped accelerating when he reached 55mph. It was a thrill but looking back seems kinda stupid. If I would have wrecked it would have been pretty bad.

same here. in fact, i kinda have an addiction to near death experiences, so i've been in some pretty hairy situations, just never paid the price. in my old age, i've kinda weaned myself off this little quirk, tho every now and then....

Geez. I can really understand where whatsisname was coming from. This off topic stuff is really annoying. I haven't been here that long and it's annyoing me to no end. Can't we just talk about the intended topic without veering violently off course every damned time someone mentions something interesting? Or shiney?
Now let's get back on topic, people. I believe it was broken bones.
