Well back I'm back from the first day of the most recent UK meetup, good fun was had by all, we spent most of the day wandering around in the drizzle taking photos of each other or in the pub, again taking photos of each other .

Louise my girlfriend came along as well and as of 5 minutes ago is a full member of TPF (Lil Loui) so expect us to be posting images from the weekend as soon as I've edited them from RAW format.

The best bit of the day? 7 of us standing outside the Australia shop in Covent Garden with telephoto lenses trained on the door waiting for Louise to emerge, soon enough we attracted a crowd of bewildered onlookers all asking who we were waiting to photograph. Someone then mentioned Kylie and things soon got out of hand, with a crowd looking very dissapointed when we all let loose with the flashguns on Louise as she stepped out of the door and then all walked away. :lmao:

buahahah so I see you had a great time! I hope everyone was there! Ben, how's Rob? Haven't heard from him for a while! how are the rest of TPF-ers?

And... don't edit the pics! just post them! be the first one with pics to show me!

first one then, this was just after Plasticspanner started getting some shifty looks from a policeman with a sub machine gun outside Downing Street due to him taking close-ups of their guns.

Haha, awesome.. Make a new thread in the gallery? :)

I'm sure a mod can move this into the gallery if they want, may as well use this thread though, as otherwise it gets confusing - especially when everyone else gets to their computers and start to upload.

Hi all.

Well it was a good day out. Minimal rain, lots of walking, and drawing attention to ourselves.

I suspect one of two photos will appear of the "TPF papparazzi" waiting outside a shop and drawing a sizable crowd of onlookers thinking someone famous was inside !

I'll be posting a few in here soon so watch this thread.

Think most of the others are back there today with the exception of me and lensmeister, so they should be posting over the next couple of days.

Right, as mr Lensmeister said, we started off at Victoria Train station, then walked towards Parliament square. On the way we stopped off at Westmister Cathedral (as we did last time) and took a few in there.

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf4.jpg

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf5.jpg

Despite there being signs that said no mobile phones, Chris was caught out when Rob phoned him from Corinnas hotel and he had to rush outside to sort it out. Chris made the first of many strange friends at this point.

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf6.jpg

Further on down the road, outside Westminster Abbey, Ben (Scurra) was getting excited, and his girlfriend Louise couldn't bear to watch.

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf7.jpg

The only American delegate...

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf8.jpg

A quick shot of everything there is to see in London - a cab, a double decker bus and Big Ben - what else is there?

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf9.jpg

We then walked up Whitehall towards Trafalgar Square where the message was that Corinna and Rob were waiting by the big orange thing. After the Downing Street firearms incident, we found that they were indeed waiting next to the big orange thing.

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf10.jpg

tempra
09-03-2006, 08:01 AM
We all then walked up to Leicester square and past the Hummer Limo, but signs were that people needed food.

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf3.jpg

After a good lunch, and watching Louise struggle with her pie for an hour before the waitress snatched it off her, we heard that Gerry (notesgraphics) was in town and hot on our tail.

We went back into a rather windy Leicester square to wait for him. After a while, Gerry came into view and was mobbed by the TPF faithful

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf16.jpg

In need of coffee (two double espressos for Rob) we went through China town, which was still quite colourful despite the gloomy skies.

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf11.jpg

No matter where in the world you are, it's always boring when someone else is talking on their phone while you are waiting.

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf12.jpg

Outside the Australian shop near Covent Garden, a pap waits for his prey...

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf13.jpg

KYLIE!!!!!!!!11!!!!!11

(or rather WTF is going on out here????)

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf14.jpg

Heading off around the corner sharpish, so as not to get beaten by an angry mob, we spot a celeb out wandering the streets.

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf15.jpg

you could feel the tension in the air, and the traffic warden started break dancing!

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf17.jpg

People were looking out of their windows to see what was going on

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf18.jpg

and the buskers knew they had no competition, and headed off home.

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf19.jpg

tempra
09-03-2006, 08:11 AM
News came through that Jean (Antarctican) was now in town, so we headed for the photographers gallery and met her there. She was typically mobbed as was Gerry and Hertz.

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf22.jpg

We then went into soho square (I think) to find a clear area for the TPF salute. Recreating a shot from the last London meet, we have Corinna demonstrating the compact on a tripod technique.

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf20.jpg

Louise did a spot of modelling....

http://www.artzam.com/images/tpf/tpf21.jpg

And some strange people started jumping on the roof of a nearby shed, those shots will be coming from someone else, as I scarpered!

The light was fading quite badly at this point, and a decision was made to find a pub.

And thats were my day ended (apart from the two hour trek home)

Cheers!

For the benefit of those who were not there...
Louise, ( Scurra's g/f ) went into the Australia Shop.
( She's an aussie but we tried not to hold it against her too much...she can't help it.)

We all waited outside..people saw all the cameras and just assumed something was going on and that someone famous was inside..
So they all stood and waited...
And waited...
Then the lights in the shop went out...
( they had a power cut but everyone outside thought they had closed the store ... _

then out pops Louise...

A couple of us took her picture...

and we left...

before there was a fight.

;-)

I believe it may have been Tony who might have "accidently" mentioned the Kylie word to some guy asking what was going on!

They didn't believe anyone who told them it was a photography meetup anyway! They were all convinced something was happening! There were people behind me on mobiles telling their friends Kylie was in the Ozzy shop!

So I live about 40miles away from London, about 20minutes on a bus to get in town and 30minutes on a train. Well that was the plan....

Get up its raining :(

20minutes on bus no problem, 30minutes on a train, yeah whatever!! more like 1hour20.

get to London its boiling hot

And getting back home was a joke 2hours 30minutes to go 40miles

Was it worth all that mucking about just to meetup with a bunch of people I've never met???

You bet it was

What a great bunch of people you all are!! I'm missing you all already.
And best of all I got to meet Antarctican : The most wonderful person on the planet ( well she did give me some chocolate and a cuddle :D )

anyways the photos .....

I'd like to point out that I'm useless at taking people shots so must of mine are of London

Just don't ask

Playing with the fisheye ( which I didn't take a single shot with )

I've got to wait until after work as I don't have enough time here to edit/resize/post/etc.

Folks, I'm home, safe and sound.
My feet got forced back to the ground immediately after I set foot into my own home and it has been running ever since...

Now that I am seeing all your photos here, I will no longer send mine. Mine are amateurish to the max and boring to add. So there ... I am frightfully intimidated now by all your extraordinarily good work!

Wow, it was good to see some of you again and some of you for the first time. Hey, what fun that was.

Next meet-up must be Hamburg, Germany! Next big one. Have as many small ones as you want to have, but come over when we have the next big one.

I'll try to organise something that will meet everyone's need, for beer, food, short walkways, cheap accomodation, city life and the back of beyond, we've got it ALL! Plan for a meet-up WEEK, that might be WISE! ;)

So as soon as (i.e. after about an hour) most of the group had found each other, rumbling stomachs could be heard all about, so food was on the agenda. Nice all English pub food (e.g. sausages on mashed potatoes, now THAT looked decidedly odd, I must say!)

Busy with them, but also the people from the Torey Hayden board are quite impatient to see my pics of our Sheep Walk (the charity walk I went on on my first weekend over in the UK, in Cornwall, those two very different meet-up being the reason why I was travelling the country for so long) ... and it's only me and my two hands around and I can't divide myself up into halves, but Day 2 is NOT FORGOTTEN! Umm Saturday I used 2 Kodak VR plus 200 iso and 1 Fuji Superia 200 iso. Started off with a VR plus 400 iso for westminster but it's very grainy. :(

But that's film for you. Shoot 1 stop under exposed and the colour saturation really comes through! :)

Tony, I am so impressed with all your photos here! The last series does not disappoint me at all - actually I am now even more deeply impressed!

I also tried to capture that scene of getting that car parked so close to the door, when he almost backed into the street sign. But my photos are snapshotty and boring as compared to your one here . I shall now hang down my head and cry  Oh yeah.

And I saw you take that picture of the balloon lamps (or whatever that was), but I didn't have a clue it would come out this nice!!!

The DocMartens punk just would not look, now would she? My two attempts at capturing her don't show much of her face, either. But again my pics look snapshotty in comparison :blushing:

And here comes my greatest WOW: that portrait of Jerry.

Cool work there, Jerry. Wow.
The turn-around pic of the person making a drawing of that model there is ... heeehee, the whole thing turned around. I like that idea so much.

And hey, now my reflection finally looks complete :D.
Though - if you wanted to be totally nitpicky - you could always say that the reflection shows that the lights were not white at the very bottom when I took the reflection shot but are white in your upper version. But who would want to be THAT nitpicky, right? No one. It would not even occur to anybody. Would it? So there.... what have I said again?

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL14/582725/12535570/185452383.jpg

Nothing would suggest this was a photographer's meet-up, would it??? No-ho-hooooooooooooooo! How ever would we guess!

Ah, but here is a detail of that very Andy-the-fisheye-lens-owner-and-totally-lost-prophet's summer home:

http://pic20.picturetrail.com/VOL14/582725/12535570/185537248.jpg

And another detail:

And its reflection:

Not bad, eh?
Hard to heat in the wintertime, I guess, but whoever owns this as their summer home won't go there in winter, would they? ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;) ;)

Teehee, I'm just seeing that Duncan made my pic into his avatar, the fisheye pic of him trying out the 100-400mm lens for the first time. Cool avatar!

Day 1

Shortly after I joined the rest of the gang in the late afternoon, we all headed off to Soho Square to take the traditional TPF Salute picture. Lafoto was in charge.

http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/8892/img1374lafotowv9.jpg

After dinner in Chinatown, the diehards made their way to Picadilly Circus to take some nighttime shots.

^^^ Eros statue in Picadilly Circus

Finally, I was the only one left standing (probably because I’d started my picture taking so much later than the others). So I made my way down to Trafalgar Square and the embankment to continue taking some shots.

Day 2

The majority of the group (eventually) met up at Euston before heading over to Canary Wharf. The swapping of the cameras and lenses began!

Then it was time for a two mile forced hike to The Gun pub, just to test Jerry’s resolve. Along the way there were plenty of photo ops.

At long last we reach the pub, only to be told the chef hadn’t shown up, so there was just minimal food service (bread, olives, fish pate, sausage, and chips/fries). Everyone kept their sense of humour about it though, and just kept snapping pictures.

Cool. You captured the "Making of Duncanp's new avatar"-moment :D. For that was when with Andy's fisheye lens on my camera I took Duncan's pic trying out Rob's (I think) 100-400mm lens for the first time. Nice.

And hey. The one of me setting up the "TPF-Salute"-shot is actually quite a nice photo of myself. That one I even like (for a change). Cool. Thanks for that one.

Maybe I can post some more until Jeanne gets ready to post her pics of Andy and others? (And no sum of money will do, you pics WILL get posted, Andy!) (Won't they, Jeanne?)

This was somewhere near Soho Square, taken on the first of our two meet-up days.

Shortly after 4:00 some of the group had to start the trek home, while the rest of us took the Docklands Railway back to the Embankment tube station. Which is where I almost got busted by the transit police for having failed to swipe my transit card back at the docklands. It’s the one time, I forgot to swipe it, the one time (really)! Luckily my charming Canadian accent (?!) indicated I’m not from here, eh? And after flashing a big innocent smile :D and making an expression of true remorse :blushing: , I was told to be more careful next time and I didn’t have to pay the fine. Whew!

Rob, our knowledgeable tour guide, led us along the north side of the river, past quaint structures and touristy sights like Tower Bridge (which I am assured is available for purchase, together with some swampland in Florida), the monument to the Great Fire (see below), and St. Paul’s, which I’m surprised to see is still being renovated, since it was under scaffolding when I was in London two years ago.

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/3438/img1627firedq0.jpg

We take the wobbly bridge across to the south side of the river and continue to the Oxo building. On a high floor there’s a lovely lounge where we have a drink while seeing the skyline at dusk.. Simply beautiful, and it’s a spot I would guess most tourists don’t know about.

Afterwards, it’s time to say goodbye to Simon, Chris and Andy who have to catch their trains home. :(

http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/9453/dscn0037kb1.jpg

Ben, Louise, Rob and I head off to find a nice spot for dinner. Rob takes us to a wine bar that’s in a converted wine cellar. It rather resembles a cave…lit by candlelight (with barely standing headroom, and water running down the walls and onto our table.) That makes it sound weird, but it was actually a very cool spot. We share a nice bottle of wine and then head to the buffet…..only to be told we’ve juuuuuuust missed the last chance to have food there. :er:

^^^^ Ben in the wine cellar

So off we head to Chinatown where we finally get some food! Afterwards, we say our goodbyes and look forward to the next international meetup.

All the people who attended this meetup were a ton of fun. I’d like to thank each one of you for making it a memorable occasion, filled with laughter and good times. You made this ‘bloody foreigner’ feel most welcome (well, for the most part. I did take my share of joshing…) :-P

Sorry folks, still too wide, you'll have to scroll horizontally...................................... .........................................>
Thanks guys! the photos turned out nicely!
I went into the Australia Shop to buy some stuff I was missing greatly from home, a guy walked up to me and asked me what was going on and who were we following I did reply that we were a forum on the internet on a day out, he didn't really seem to believe me too much.
Then a min later the lights and fan went off & everybody was unsure what was happening.. The staff reassured us that it was just a power failure (due to a night club up the road having problems), the doors were closed, we had to leave the store & could only pay for our goods in cash.
After paying for my grub in exact change I headed towards the door where some people were begging the door man to let them in to get some Vodka.
It was a great experience to step out into crowds of people (that weren't there when I went in), faced by 'papparazzi' & have my photo snapped dozens of times! :camera::camera::camera::camera: And also wondered what mischeif the rest of the group had gotten themselves into...

If there's any red bits it's probably cause I was blushing :blushing: as well as a bit of sunburn...
Ooooo and you can see what I bought as well!! (Minties, Sao biscuits, BBQ sauce, cherry ripe.. All the good Aussie things!)
Cheers,
Louise.

Louise - you're a star !! That was one of the funniest things I have expereinced in ages - TOTALLY worth the trip just for that !

It's been really cool to see everyone's pics - I'm very very jealous of some of them - and evenmore jealous of some of your cameras and lenses !

I'm starting a savings fund and thinking of selling my body - should be worth quite a bit to the whale industry...
