Self-Portraits

This isn't really a question, so it might be in the wrong forum. Please move, if management so sees fit...

I hate having my picture taken. And yet over the years I have this recurring obsession with the self-portrait. It kind of makes sense, in that this way I am in full control of the image of myself that will be shown, and since I so much hate seeing pictures of myself, I have to obsessively long for that one picture that will finally be as I myself see me and would therefore be willing to show to others. Look here I am! Screw all those crappy pics that other people (try to) take of me. This is the real me. This is me inside and out.

I feel the bug hitting me again, especially now that I am in the darkroom again. Is anyone else like this?

Yes, and in fact, I'd love to learn how to take a good one. Ive tried adn tried but I always come out looking rather blah, and like I was the photographer. SO ok maybe its the subject ;)

I hate to see myself in pics. My friends and family tell me I'm photogenic...but all I can see are the imperfections.

The self portrait in my bio is the only pic I really like of myself...and it's a self portrait.

A soft light (ie: softbox or light bounced off a white surface) will greatly reduce the imperfections that make it to film.

Don't forget to use the clone stamp to take out the rest 8)

Here's the first submission (i don't usually look this glum. Really!) :wink:

For the shot i used a tripod and shot into a mirror

Spec's: available window light, T-Max 400, hand printed the negative in reverse (to achieve a "true" likeness) then scanned the photo on a flat bed

I'll move my photo into the new conference when it's been set up...

Sid is a nickname dating back to when I was 3or 4 years old and no one is sure where it came from.
When trying to use plain "Sid" as a name in various on-line forums I've always found someone else has bagged it first and likewise when I added the "Mr" in front so the "99" came about in 1999 when I first needed something unique so I've stuck to ever since.

Ok, here's the latest semi-acceptable self-p of me, taken last Friday. It's not supposed to be cropped so tight on top, but my scan at kinko's f-ed up when I saved it and there was a huge black line at the top. Sorry for the crappy scan quality, all they had the scanner hooked up to was a Mac, and I'd never used a Mac before, so I didn't know what I was doing, plus trying to do it fast, and therefore cheap.........

Yeah, the more I look at this one and the print, I am not minding the crop so much. I don't mind losing the forehead, but I do wish I had the rest of that eyebrow. But I don't care so much to actually get the print scanned again!

This is again Ilford HP5 at 400, auto exposure, developed for only 6 minutes due to the heat, printed on Ilford MGIV RC pearl (I think, I was trying out some new paper, so it could also be Paterson). It was exposed for 10 seconds at f/11 (I think, hard to see on enlargers! It was a couple stops closed up anyway.) The lower right corner (hand and triangle of hardwood floor) was then burned for an additional 10 seconds fully opened up due to direct sunlight washing it out.

I just let my hair grow out for a while. It was shaved about a year previous to that photo. After 2 years, it was down to my mid back so I decided it needed to be cut. 2 bad haircuts in a week led me to shave most of it off. i had the bangs for a while until I colored them real ugly. All my hair is about an inch long now (and bleach blonde).

The guy in the avatar is Kibagami Jubei from the Ninja Scroll anime. I didn't intent to look like him or pick him because he looks like me. I don't see the resemblence actually :P

Self-portraits are a funny thing. I liked the post that kicked this all off, because I agree that the goal of self-portraits is to be able to present the image of yourself that you see to the world. One's own image of one's self is seldom the one most others see, but it is an accurate image of a sort.

I spent much of my life hating having to see myself from an unusual perspective. I spent time carefully finding an image of myself I could stand, thank you, and I didn't WANT to be presented with anything else. As I changed, I entered a phase where I became quite pleasantly surprised by other perspectives. I'm not sure where I am now.

Seeing people's pictures here is fascinating because it represents, in some sense, the way people want us to see them. Thus we have amazingly beautiful, intriguing women, and men with unfathomable depths behind enigmatic stares. Every person shown here seems interesting. And I suppose, ultimately, if we saw everyone the way he sees himself, everyone would be interesting.

Enough talk. Here's a series on me.

This is the most recent picture, taken tonight. My eyes are sunken into black pits and my hair is a dark halo around me. I look like so many men see themselves, I think: pensive and melancholy. I think the more my face is hidden the more it seems like mine. I only see myself from the inside, after all, and seeing just the brow and the frown somehow gives you an understanding of what it feels like to peer out of my eyes.

Sure, it's typical. But I think it's genuine, even so.

This is not a self-portrait. It was taken by my wife, and shows me as I often am: silly, happy, and with a big grin. That's me, too.

This portrait is a throw-back to adolescence. Half the reason any boy takes up guitar is because he loves the image of himself wrapped around the beautiful thing, expression intent on his own inner muse. But, once again, I think it rises past this obstacle by being true to the experience. Playing guitar feels like this.

Finally, my favorite. (Also the one that friends and relatives say looks nothing like me.) Altered color, even a photoshop filter... yet somehow in the bizarre yellows and greens and the off-kilter stare is my favorite me.

Vonnagy, thankyou. My father is from Samoa and moved to NZ for 7yrs. As did most of his family. They all live in or near to Aukland. I have been there 3 times, unfortunately all my photos are in albums at my house 13hrs away :( I have sooo many too. I think I took 3 rolls of the bubbling mud in rotorua (It's my fav thing, sooooo neat!).
