These recent threads have really sparked my interest in learning more about photographers and looking at their work. I have spent minimal time researching others and I think I should take a step back and discover things I've missed. So please suggest photographers for myself and others that you have found to be and influence or just plain like and post your reasons (why you like their work, what makes it stand out, etc.) This would greatly help me in my endless quest, and I'm sure others as well :)

I really like rosemary Laing. Her work is surreal and dream like without using any digital manipulation. She goes to great lengths to setup her shots. IMO she is worth checking out.

If you give me a few days I will produce a sticky of the Photographic greats from the past 150 years - the ones who's shoulders we all stand on.
I've been meaning to do it for some time.
I'll add links to examples as and when I find them.
Knowing about the History of Photography is almost essential, to my mind. How do we know where we are going if we don't know where we have come from?

Here are a selection of sites that list many famous photographers, and have some examples of their work.

My favourite photographer is Frank Meadow Sutcliffe Hon. F.R.P.S. (1853-1941)

Have a look at his work from the North East of Yorkshire. I have some of his photographs dotted round my house.

Also Annie Leibovitz is a fave too ... she captures people so very well.

This is just one of my faves, I like his work...pretty wild, and creepy. You may be familiar with some of his advertising work. His book "Silver" contains some more images not on the site.

Erwin Olaf

also Ryan McGinley. A young photographer. lots of nudity, but very interesting effects...

Then there's Thomas Demand. Not sure whether I would consider him a sculptor or photographer...I went to his show at MoMA, MASSIVE photographs, like Struth and Gursky. It took me a while to "figure out" what I was looking at :) Clever!

That's defintely something i need to delve into more. i don't know many off the top of my head but I have always aspired to my friends dad www.bobmartin.com as i started out doing sports. he's won a 2 or 3 sports photographer of the year awards and covered pretty much every major sporting event from several olympics games, to wimbledon to the world cup.

testino's portraits will always my favourite i think.
