One of my digital creations was a spliced photo of my roommate's cat looking out the window.

Difficult lighting on the cat, so here's a couple of silly ones. Hope they entertain!

i can see it. you walk into the room, and the cat turns around and starts mumbling to you in a british accent, "um, excuse me, but uh, there is something odd going on outside in the yard, and um, you might want to come and take a look at it. it seems a bit hostile."

It's really a basic thing to do, once you understand the principle of LAYERS.

In Photoshop (or other software), you can create layers. Think of it as one or more transparencies with images on them. You can see the image on the top, and if there are any transparent parts on the top layer, you can see to the layer below. Just like how they have been making cartoons for the last 80 years.

Since photos are created without any transparent areas, you have to create them by cutting, covering up or erasing parts of the photo. In this case, you would cut out the view out of the window. Then you can add another photo as a layer under the cat layer. It's as simple as that.

Have a look at this site http://www.luminous-landscape.com/

It's got a lot of info & tutorials...some of which can be quite technical & intimidating...but you should be able to get some good basic info there. Then if you have more specific questions, you can ask them back here.
