I recently saw some of Arnold Newmans work and was blown away, surely the guy that pioneered the environmental portrait deserves a mention here:
you can see some of his work here: http://www.peterfetterman.com/artists/newman/newman_sm.html

I love Arnold Newman. His portrait of Igor Stravinsky is one of my all time favorites.

Arnie sure is one of the all-time greats - his portrait of Krups is too stunning for words. It says so much about that gentleman.
Nice site here with some video excerpts of an interview.

No, I meant the one where he's sitting with the piano.
I think that a combination of a wide angle lens and the pattern of the tiles makes the one you posted look the way it does. Both add a lot of depth.

This one, Matt?

This is also the most popular photo Newman has taken, I believe. Often copied but never equalled.
Difficult to imagine it was taken more than 50 years ago.

This is great stuff. Just this evening on the way home I was thinking about how much I disliked portraiture and how boring and bland I find it, and then I see these. Wonderful. It's so much more than just a face. It's the life behind them.
